Death Café is a unique venture where strangers come together to discuss death and dying over tea and delicious cake.
Ex-council worker Jon Underwood developed Death Cafe from a simple philosophy: “remembering death helps you enjoy life”. On this basis he and a group of partners have been developing projects to enable willing individuals across the world to explore their own feelings about death.
Death Café is based on the ideas of Swiss sociologist Bernard Crettaz. Crettaz has described his mission as liberating death from “tyrannical secrecy”. His ‘Café Mortels’ in Switzerland proved extremely popular and a similar event began in France. After reading about these Jon introduced Death Cafe to the UK in September 2011 as a pop-up café in his home.
