Exhibition: Charles Dickens - A Southwark childhood

Fact into fiction - The new exhibition at the Cuming Museum

This free family friendly exhibition celebrates 200th anniversary of the birth of novelist and social reformer Charles Dickens. It explores his experiences of the Borough area of Southwark during 1824 when his father was imprisoned for debt in the Marshalsea Prison.

Discovery the places, people and living conditions he experienced during his short time in the area, that provided inspiration for many of his characters and narratives in his later writing. The exhibition explores key locations, such as the Marshalsea Prison, St George the Martyr Church and Mint Street workhouse through objects, artworks and illustrations from Southwark’s collections.

The exhibition is accompanied by a lively events programme for adults and families.
