Are you single? Ifo so, make new friends and meet new like-minded single people by joining us for a great Sunday afternoon walk in London Docklands which has been of major historical importance in the history of London. In 1802 the West India Company built the first dock which enabled ships to unload cargoes of rum, coffee and sugar into the warehouses on West India Quay, which are now Grade 1 listed buildings. During the second world war the docks were a major target for bombing, but despite this, trade survived. It is now popularly known as Canary Wharf, which is a reminder of the days when goods travelled here from the Canary Islands. In 1981 the London Docklands Development Corporation took over the regeneration of the docks. One Canada Square, the then tallest building in the U.K. opened in 1991. We meet outside Canary Wharf DLR station at 12.30 pm and then do a circular walk around the waterways of London Docklands, taking in the contrasts of 19th century warehouses where the dockers worked, to the 21st century skyscrapers of London’s major business centre. We also visit the quiet backwaters of Popular Dock and take in the magnificent views of the River Thames. We stop halfway round for a drink in one of the many bars or café’s, for some much needed refreshments. Our walks are a great way to make new friends and meet new people in a relaxed and friendly environment. Do not worry if you are coming alone as you will made to feel welcome and will have a great time. Please note that we are meeting outside the main entrance of Canary Wharf DLR station in South Colonnade, (not the tube station which is nearby).
