About National Army Museum
The National Army is located on Royal Hospital Road. This Museum was established and run by the British Army since it first opened. The Museum tells the story of the British Army from the fifteenth century to modern day. Amongst the many exhibits is an excellent Redcoats section. This section of the Museum chronicles the period from 1415 to 1792 with paintings, original artefacts and many full sized models of Redcoat soldiers in traditional dress and with weapons from the period.
"The Road to Waterloo" follows the British Army through the events leading up to and during the Battle of Waterloo. Among the items on view is the full skeleton of Napoleons stallion Marengo and the captured eagle standard of the French 105th regiment. There is also a forty metre model of the battlefield, complete with models of the many thousands of soldiers who took part. The Victorian Soldier exhibit contains one of the finest collections of Army uniforms in the world. Richard Caton-Woodville's famous "Charge of the Light Brigade" painting is one of the most memorable pieces in this collection.
Paintings by both Gainsborough and Reynolds can be found among the collections in the National Army Museum. As well as permanent exhibits, the Museum regularly hosts temporary collections from other museums or private collections. Admission to the National Army Museum is free of charge and the site contains an extensive gift shop.
