Hayley plumbs for a new career

Local resident swaps chef work for pipe work, re-training to become a plumber with CNWL

Deciding to change jobs is one thing, but to decide to re-train for a job in a totally different industry is quite another. Yet this is exactly what Finsbury Park resident, Hayley Chikhaoui, 41, has done after she decided to quit her job as a patisserie chef and become a plumber – and she’s not looked back since.

Hayley is now training to become a plumber at the College of North West London and is loving every minute of it. The course covers both the practical skills and the theoretical knowledge she needs and whilst at times challenging, this is what Hayley thrives on. Hayley comments: “I am really enjoying the whole experience. Becoming a plumber mixes all the things I like – a job where you’re always busy, one that allows me to utilise my practical skills and also gives me the opportunity to meet lots of different people.”

It’s certainly different to life in a kitchen. As Hayley continues: “I enjoyed the work, but at heart I am a ‘techie’ and both my father and grandfather worked in the construction industry back in Ireland, so it feels like going back to my roots.” Now with the support of her two children, and her tutors at the College, she has her heart set on becoming a successful plumber. She adds: “I hope that when I qualify I will be able to work for an organisation in the borough, to help make people happier in their homes.” In fact, Hayley is currently looking to volunteer her services to local plumbing companies, as she is keen to build up her work experience portfolio while she is studying.

Hayley is not alone in choosing to retrain. Up to 10,000 adults with an average age of 36 study at the College every year, with many returning to education after a break or looking for a new challenge. For Hayley that means this year studying for her qualification in plumbing and sitting her maths GCSE. Becoming a student again though is not something to be scared of, says Hayley: “Making the decision to leave my job and study to become a plumber was a difficult one, but one that was definitely worth it. This course has not only given me the skills I need to help me on my way to being a plumber, it’s given me confidence to follow my dreams.” She adds: “I really believe if you don’t try something you’ll never know if you like it so I’d say, if you’ve been thinking of getting into a trade, then do it! It might be the best decision you ever make.”

There are a wide range of courses on offer at the College, from apprenticeships, higher education courses and vocational courses. For more information please visit cnwl.ac.uk or call 0208 208 5050.
