It is not easy to keep people focused on your venue in a city like London with so much going on. There have been extensive casualties on the nightlife scene over the past decade but that doesn’t stop owners and promoters looking to bring new, relevant clubs and nights to the capital. Trapeze is one of these clubs. Taking over from the old East Village, Trapeze comes with established DJ and promoting pedigree in the form of programmers Stuart Patterson and Barry Eaton.

For those that remember East Village’s basement, you’ll be please to hear that Trapeze plans to celebrate what is undoubtedly one of east London’s best subterranean spaces. And starting with that large, dance floor-only space and a famously good sound system is an enviable base for Trapeze to have. Opening on Thursday 27th March, the first weekend will see the club welcome artists including Giles Smith of Secretsundaze (pictured), Casino Times, Keb Darge and more.

We got in depth with Trapeze promoter Barry Eaton about what to expect from the new Shoreditch space.

On what inspired the name Trapeze…
The name Trapeze is inspired by one of the oldest Circus performing arts schools located in Hoxton. There is the love of performance, which is the obvious link but also the extravagance that will be a feature in the food and drink provided in the ground floor bar.

On new interior direction…
The basement club is almost identical as what was at East Village. The much-loved dance floor-only space, no furniture and serious DJ booth and sound system are the same. Upstairs, the venue is being totally transformed and will be a unique space and design for the area, in line with the venue name.

On the music programme…
Saturday nights at the venue will remain House and Disco led, with Stuart Patterson as the resident DJ and some of the much loved events from East Village - such as Sancho Panza - returning. Although there will be alternative events across the week and eclectic sounds such as the brilliant weekly Thursday Hawaiian Bop night (run by Richio Suzuki), Fridays and Saturdays will be mainly Disco, Funk, House and Electronica.

On big names…
Already in April we have Smokin’ Jo, Asadinho and one of our favourite New York legends, Victor Simonelli booked in. We’re hitting the ground running. May will also have an international feel with DJs from Berlin, Valencia and Sweden booked. If there are artists and DJs we want, we will be determined to get them.

On the ground floor and basement rooms…
The new look will of course be the main difference. The ground floor will be open 5 days a week with the club at this moment mainly open on Fridays and Saturdays. On the weekends the venue will not be split into two for the events themselves, so there will be a link between with the music complementing the whole Trapeze package. However, in the future there will be the option of running two events on the same night as was done on various occasions at East Village.

On what Trapeze will offer…
The empty, music and dance floor driven space in the basement to us is massively exciting. And the incredible refurbishment and eccentricity of the ground floor bar is big in a different way. Musically, again we are really excited in what we have to offer.
