The government has revealed plans that they intend to have the default retirement age scrapped in a bid to deal with the fact that the population is aging more. It is expected that these plans will come into place by October 2011. This would prevent companies from forcing retirement on individuals once they reach the age of 65.

If these changes come into place employers will simply be required to make sure that they meet with staff who turn 65 to discuss what they would like to do when they reach the current retirement age.

Age UK have supported these plans stating: "We've fought really hard to get government to do this. It is a massive win for hundreds of thousand of employees who are at risk of being forced out of their jobs."

It is hoped that this change will assist with the economy but there are concerns from employers that there will be difficulties in managing the workforces as this will complicate matters.
