The show, which is loosely based on Victor Hugo’s novel of the same name, has been running in the West End since 1985. It attracted forty percent of all the votes cast.
On receiving the award from singer Elaine Page, Sir Cameron Mackintosh said, “It's amazing. When I heard that we'd won it, I couldn't quite believe it because several of my other shows, which I also adore, were in the running”.
“The Phantom of the Opera” came second in the poll but several famous musicals, including “The Sound of Music” and “Grease” didn’t make the top ten.
