As Hoxton and Shoreditch become ever more expensive, the cool-hunters have had to move further up the road to Dalston. Home to hipsters and trustafarians, uber-fashionable Dalston suffers from a huge social divide between the new middle class arrivals and the ethnically diverse local community. Its recent surge in popularity has brought with it all manner of trendy bars and cafes, which seem to be at odds with the Turkish and Afro-Caribbean shops that have existed here for years; like Dalston’s inhabitants, the two don’t mingle. On the plus side the vibrant Ridley Road Market still thrives, as does the Rio Cinema, one of the few independent cinemas remaining in London.
