| About Docklands Technically, the Docklands span a large number of areas including the boroughs of Greenwich, Tower Hamlets, Southwark and Newham. This blanket name is relatively new and was only used for the first time in governmental report of 1971. Broadly speaking, the London Docklands encompasses the old docks along the river banks. To the west, the London Docklands start at St Katharine Docks in Wapping and end up at the Royal Docks in the east.
The docks were largely destroyed during the Second World War and subsequently redeveloped into the up-market residential and commercial area that it is today. Most of the Docklands can be seen from the river and this area does not generally attract tourists. Despite this, the Docklands are going from strength to strength with the growth of Canary Wharf. |
