At the core of London is the district known as The City. However, despite the importance of this district, the boundaries have not been extended since the Middle Ages, which has resulted in The City being a relatively small geographic part of the capital.
Although The City does not cover a big area, it is, nevertheless, a very important commercial and economic district and is considered on a par with New York in the financial stakes. Today, The City is often referred to as the ‘Square Mile’. Interestingly only about 10,000 people live in the area known as The City but more than 310,000 people work in the very same area, on a daily basis.
