All In London Review

Two years on, Tibits still delivers

The self-service, vegetarian eatery on cool Heddon Street is still as good as it was two years ago, and ever more popular.

There are certain dishes that have been a fixture since Tibits opened in 2008 and are still making an appearance and (if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it) such as the simple tofu and tomato salad and the fusili pasta and tofu with black olives. Easy they may sound, but Tibits appear to know the secret to making every dressing extra flavoursome.

The quinoa salads and daals remain, however the Thai curry is a new addition, and they have decided to remove the vegetarian sliced sausage. The homemade falafels are rich and crunchy, the red pepper hummus has a hint of spice and the focaccia is herby, while the spinach and cheese croquettes ooze mozzarella; in short, everything tastes as appetizing as it looks on the self-service counter, thereby any notion of greed at having filled the plate till its about to tip over feels duly rewarded. In fact, everything looks so pretty under the lights I’ve even been persuaded to sprinkle rennet-free cheese all over my salad.

It’s the desserts where Tibits are really trying to experiment. The cheesecake, while considerably different in texture to what one would expect, is wonderful, a walnut biscuit base has an earthy richness that’s still sweet, while the mousse has clearly been made with a soya-derivative, not to say it isn’t good, quite the contrary.

The pineapple and coconut tiramisu is original, in a good way, it’s just that it’s not tiramisu. The flavour of coffee is noticeably absent and even the coconut advertised on the sign appears to be missing, however pineapple slices + creamy topping + cinnamon makes for a scrumptious pud in its own right.

This affordable vegetarian eatery has been delivering consistently good food for two years, and its popularity shows no sign of waning.

Where the delicious meets the healthy

Family run, Tibits puts flavour before anything else. The food on offer here is good enough to rival any gourmet restaurant, with the added bonus of it being self service, and you can take away too.

Tibits is a Swiss concept which began 8 years ago, opening in London’s Heddon Street in early October, where it is sandwiched in between trendy eatery Momo’s and the Ice bar. In spite of this challenge the sheer tastiness of the food ensures it stands out from its neighbours. The managers are certainly set on conquering the English capital with another branch having opened in West London’s new super mall Westfield’s only a few weeks later.

The idea is simple, grab a plate or take away box, pile with food and pay according to weight. A full plate (full to the brim!) cost £8.90. There is an ample variety of both cold and hot foods, deserts, fresh juices, and even cocktails and wines.

Ingredients are cooked from fresh throughout the day, and what a feast to both the eyes and the stomach they are. The salads alone are enough to fill a whole plate: Greek, potato (in a delicious vinaigrette dressing rather than mayo), quinoa, bean salad, pasta salad with cherry tomatoes and black olives, vegetable sausage salad, walnut apple and fig salad…the combinations go on. All were flavoursome and all the more satisfying knowing how healthy the ingredients were. Amongst the hot food there was mushroom risotto, courgette lasagne, cooked fennel, whole flour dumplings and green beans, dahl, vegetable samosas (which lacked the distinct greasiness these little parcels usually have). Sandwiches filled with tofu, tomato and chutney or a tofu and Tikka filling are available, as well as accompaniments such as potato wedges, six or seven different dressings, individual salad ingredients, and a variety of breads.

Wine has been carefully selected, upon attempting to order a Spanish red I was persuaded to try the Austrian Zweigl which I had never heard of, gladly so as this turned out to be one of the smoothest wines I have sampled in a long time. Deserts were suitably moreish; try the chocolate brownie, the cinnamon turnover or vegan apple pastry if you have a sweet tooth. On my second visit (I returned in a matter of a week) I even spied a ginger tiramisu.

My companion for the evening, being a vegan, could not believe how much choice she was offered. Usually relegated to a salad in most restaurants at Tibits she found it possible to eat to her hearts’ content.

The décor reminded me very much of Scandinavian minimalism, a mixture of high chairs, comfy sofas and coffee tables on which to enjoy an Assai tea or Chai of an afternoon. The seating outside will lend itself perfectly to early evening cocktails in days of better weather whilst observing the traffic of quaint Heddon Street.

An impressive effort where the delicious meets the healthy. Do not miss.
