Restaurant cum bar from the Soho House Group falls a little short of the mark
Being owned by Nick Jones, the man behind Soho House, Pizza East and the nearby Café Boheme sets the bar high for Boheme Kitchen and Bar.
The Old Compton Street location - where it can be hard to swing a cat at the best of times - ensures a steady stream of punters to the venue on any given night.
Inside, the venue is laid out with wooden floorboards, tables that have been arranged with the eye of an OCD sufferer and the obligatory leather banquettes with cushions. It’s a little sterile, but it’s comfortable and clean. Those wanting a more sociable experience can take a seat at the circular bar.
One of the plus points of this restaurant cum bar is that it stays open later than many of its neighbours, till 1am during the week and 3am from Thursday to Saturday. As such there is a ‘midnight menu’ with things like calamari, macaroni and cheese and omelettes for hungry night owls.
Earlier in the evening the menu is composed mostly of comfort food - think fish and chips, steaks, BBQ ribs and fish finger sandwiches (the latter priced at £10!) As can be expected there is an extensive cocktail list with twists on the classics: Apple Manhattan, Watermelon Martini and Chilli and Mango Daiquiri being just some of the varieties available.
Boheme Kitchen and Bar lacks some of the atmosphere of nearby Café Boheme, which has a distinctly European feel to it thanks to its intimate size and central bar where many strike up conversation with whoever is next to them. It’s the kind of place that’s ok for a late night drink, but fairly unremarkable on other fronts.
