Cook your own steak to your liking

Situated amidst the tourist trappings of Leicester Square, Steak & Co’s menu is likely to appeal to the area’s visitors. Chicken wings, scampi and nachos are some of the family-pleasing options that appear on the menu of what at first seems to essentially be a more upmarket Angus Steak House.

There is a decent selection of alcohol comprising well-priced wines (the most expensive being £21), spirits and bottled beers. Our starters are ok: a selection of small freshwater prawns plus two lovely, fleshy king prawns have been cleverly wrapped in a ribbon made from thinly sliced cucumber, served with shot glasses of Marie Rose dressing and mayonnaise; the calamari is slightly chewy, but it’s been fried in a tasty peppery batter. Then it’s time for the main purpose of our visit, the Steak Stone (£25 for 8oz), a fillet steak that is partially cooked in the kitchen and then served on a hot slate where it continues to heat before your eyes. We are given extra large napkins to shield our clothes, which make us wonder whether the meat is actually going to arrive spitting, thankfully it’s more of a satisfactory sizzle. We slice our steaks and watch the meat turn brown whilst adding butter – there are various choices including chilli and parsley butters as well as red wine and mushroom sauces (a wholegrain mustard butter particularly complements the Béarnaise). We also have great fun grilling our salad ingredients in the juices of the meat, giving us lovely, crisp tomato slices and onions.

As accompaniments we chow down on chunky chips and a suggested macaroni and cheese, which turns out to be creamy and delicious despite our initial snobbery, however we do wonder at the effect of steak + chips + pasta on our hearts, and that’s before we’ve got to the Grand Marnier soufflé, which sounds far posher than it is, being an orange liquor-flavoured ice cream with chopped nuts, and the chocolate fondant with ice cream which oozes warm thick chocolate sauce.

The novelty factor of cooking at the table is enjoyable and the main reason to visit Steak & Co, but it comes at a price - a three course meal for two with wine is approximately £100.

The rib eye steak here was absolutely gorgeous, I have recommended it to at least 5 people already. The house merlot was very smooth too. I enjoyed the experience and the fact my steak was still cooking and kept hot on a cast iron plate whilst I chatted with friends!
