Poor attempt at Middle Eastern food, but great cakes

From the outside, the new branch of Del’ Aziz in Clapham looks like a portacabin. Inside it’s large and confusing; opposite the entrance is a counter and a cake display, and it’s not apparent which way we should turn for the dining area. We are eventually sat at a table bang in the middle of the room, where we feel hugely exposed, “I don’t like this” says the companion.

The menu has a bit of Middle Eastern, a bit of North African, and some Mediterranean thrown in too, from tagines and Persian kebabs to fish burgers with sumac mayonnaise.

It starts off well with the boreck, delicious spring-roll style dumplings filled with melted feta cheese and mint. The grilled Merguez sausages on the other hand need more salt, as despite the obvious use of spice they taste bland.

The tiger prawns with chili and lime are ok, but £19.50 for six prawns is a tad steep, particularly given that a side dish of undercooked harissa potatoes has to be ordered separately for £4.50.

The rabbit tagine with liver has all the smells a well-seasoned tagine should have, but the meat lacks flavour, as if it hasn’t been given the proper time to absorb the ingredients. It’s also a little on the tough side, but the liver is good.

For dessert we venture to the counter and choose cheesecake and bread and butter pudding. The portions that arrive are bigger than a person’s head, but the baked cheesecake is gorgeous, the pudding golden and gooey, so we take the leftovers home.

Unfortunately this attempt at Middle Eastern/Mediterranean cuisine is poorly executed, but hey, the cakes are delicious.

Unfortunately our party were very disappointed with Del'Aziz. The service was unwelcoming, unhelpful and slow. The food barely resembled middle eastern cuisine. It lacked flavour and authenticity. Sadly we would not recommend this restaurant or indeed visit again. Our view overall was that the services being provided - deli, restaurant ( offering too many dishes) and bar are too many activities for them to be carried out to any level of excellence.

Slow service and wrong dish brought to the table with little apology. The smell of table cleaning fluid did little to help the atmosphere as did the dead candle on our table. 20 min to bring the bill and another 10 min to have our card taken. At this price, you'd expect more and frankly there's far better to choose from in this area. Don't waste your money here.
