All In London Review
If only there were more raw food vegan eateries like this one
Wild Food Café is located on the site of what once was the World Food Café, a similar concept to this one but with cuisines from around the world. Much of the menu is vegan or can be made vegan, and foods not cooked above 39 C are labelled “sunfood”. No alcohol is served but you can drink smoothies called “Crocodile Juice” and “Forgotten Ecstasy”. Dishes are prepared from scratch in full view of the customers, and it’s clear the staff are having a lot of fun while they work away. So far, so yoga-tastic, but before you yawn at the prospects of “wellbeing” and “health” consider that the food might just be pretty damn delicious.
A large plate of warm baby potato salad is excellent - the bright mustardy dressing is sensational with crunchy walnuts, artichoke hearts, chicory, tangy capers and gherkins and samphire. Olive-lovers will adore the plump burger made from shiitake mushrooms and black olives, dunked in a sourdough focaccia bun with gherkins, a hint of Dijon mustard, ketchup and lettuce. A sheep’s cheese sandwich called “Sheepy” has thick slices of mature cheese from next door’s Neal’s Yard Dairy, caramelized onions and tomato slices served on crusty toasted sourdough. You don’t have to stick to sandwiches and burgers though - hot meals change daily according to what produce is available.
The desserts take around 15 minutes to arrive because everything is freshly made before our eyes - even the ice cream. A supremely gloopy chocolate tart has a peanut base and coconut ice cream; crushed peanuts and hazelnuts make up the base of an apple and blueberry crumble, topped with coconut flakes and a dollop of refreshing blueberry ice cream which is just a tad creamier than sorbet.
The meal comes to around £35, making Wild Food Café even more appealing; sceptics would do well to pay this cheerful place a visit.
