You'll be pleased to hear that unlike another local restaurateur, there is no Putney Pies factory on an industrial estate in Wandsworth - everything is made on the premises and cooked to order from fresh ingredients.
We buy our meats from Allens of Mayfair and we make all our own pastry in-house. Vegetables and other ingredients are sourced locally and reflect the seasons, so you'll get asparagus in June and samphire in July.
We'll always have something fresh on the menu, such as our daily and seasonal specials - so always ask what's new. Everything's freshly prepared in-house and we don't freeze our pies so if we run out of something, it means it's good.
Because our pies are cooked to order, they may take a little longer than some of our fast food competitors, but we're sure you'll find them worth the wait.

All In London Review

Beautiful pies done the traditional way

Far from this being a simple takeout pie shop, Putney Pies is a mecca, a veritable haven for lovers of pies, tarts, quiches and puff pastry parcels. Even better is the fact that rather than sex up this staple food, it is here in its purest, simplest form, with humble fillings like ox cheek or steak and kidney, served with heaps of gravy and mashed potato and sides like cauliflower cheese and baked beans (but if you do wish to glamorise your meal you can always swap the ale or a bottle of Rioja or Laurent Perrier).

There is bread and a selection of “Putney Chutneys” to nibble on first of all, including a festive mulled cranberry and an orange and sweet chilli variety. A large rectangular platter arrives with a pair of mini pies, one filled with seasoned sausage meat, the other with creamy chicken and leek, along with chunks of very mature Cheddar and salad with a mustardy dressing cleverly displayed in a bowl made out of a lettuce leaf. Another platter has thick slices of salmon and halibut, both smoked, with crispy puff pastry twists and crème fraiche. Both starters are delightful.

The pies are simply wonderful. Both have a beautiful gold crust and sit atop a creamy layer of mash in plenty of gravy. The steak and kidney pie has a distinctive taste of offal and rich ale-based gravy; the wild boar pie, one of the day’s specials, is beautifully seasoned, with almost garlicky hunks of dark meat.

Desserts are homely, like apple pie, and crumble; the curiously named Putney mud pie is a gooey dark chocolate tart with a biscuit base.

It may seem an odd proposition in affluent, middle class Putney, (as are the prices, a meal for two comes to just £45), but if you have the slightest interest in pies this restaurant cannot be missed.

No mucking about... these are proper pies!

This may be sacrilege to purists, but we’ll guiltily confess to liking the posh pies at this Putney restaurant. What pastry lover can resist venison and salami, pork belly with bacon and apple, and even a chili con carne pie with guacamole and Cheddar cheese? Plus you can complete the experience with a starter of “pie bites” and mini beef Wellingtons.
