All In London Review

No doubt one of South London's best brunch spots

Review Image
Fans of local knowledge might like to hear that the area located to the north of Peckham Road, opposite the South London Gallery and its stylish café/restaurant No. 67, is known as the ‘Peckham Toast Rack’. Parallel roads line up in uniform stripes off of the main road, presenting ultra desirable million pound houses that were once plain, simple, two up, two down terraces. How the area has evolved. Caught between Camberwell and Peckham, No. 67 probably attracts a range of those nearby residents to its leafy, dare we say, idyllic, spot set back from the road inside the South London Gallery’s grand Victorian mansion.

If you’re not local, we’ll just say that the independently run café and restaurant is well worth a weekend stroll into unknown territory because this is one of South London’s best brunch spots. Split into two distinct spaces, there is a large, airy, simple concrete extension that lets views of the garden offer the aesthetic inspiration, backed up by gold leaf illustrations on the walls. The front of the café is a more styled space, with dangling filaments, brass tabletops, putty coloured walls and bare wooden floorboards framed by a grand bay window housing the best table for two in the place.

The evening restaurant serves up a range of modern European dishes, focusing on fresh local ingredients. The daytime café focuses on brunch, which is why we visit. It used to be coffee shops that predicted an area on the rise, but since there are so many of those popping up, we’ve got strict and decided that the rule has been narrowed to coffee shops serving cold press coffee. Following our rule and Peckham is done and dusted in terms of rejuvenation because No. 67 does an excellent cold press coffee. Along with the chilled caffeine we eat the beetroot smoked trout eggs royale and the Full Spanglish – essentially a full English with sausage and bacon substituted for chorizo. Delicious. No. 67 may look great but the food is as much of a turn on in this café as the space itself.

With the free South London Gallery and bookshop in the same building, brunch comes with a bonus.

Charming dishes and humble prices

If you believe overzealous reporters (and estate agents for that matter), perhaps you were suckered in by the news that Peckham was the new Shoreditch five years ago. And indeed, things like Frank’s Campari Rooftop Bar and nightclub-and-art-café The Bussey Building may suggest SE15 is getting cooler.

But walk down noisy Rye Lane and you’ll find pound shops and cheap butchers (remember those?), mobile phone unlocking shops and heaps of litter covering the street. Redchurch Street it ain’t, however tell-tale signs of an area ripe for gentrification can be found as you head towards Camberwell. This leafy stretch with pretty terraced houses is where the South London Gallery is located, the area’s very own contemporary art space, handily right next to the reputable Camberwell College of Art.

No. 67 is the independently-run café and restaurant on the gallery premises. It extends into the conservatory of the bright Victorian building it inhabits, and it’s packed full of customers on the Friday lunchtime we attend, most of whom are hipsters or ladies of a certain age.

Food is simple and wholesome, like the hearty smoked pulled pork stew (£8) with soft, practically mushy meat and butter beans. A lighter option is the sweet potato tart (£7) with crunchy walnuts, feta cheese and strong hints of mint, a curious combo that works a treat.

A range of sponge cakes served in generous portions are available for dessert or as part of afternoon tea; we try the rich, gingery beetroot cake and the gloriously syrupy upside down apricot cake, both delicious and a snip at £3.25 each.
Whether Peckham is still on the cusp of becoming the next big thing or not, we like this café’s charming dishes and humble prices.

Great places to enjoy breakfast in London

It's the most important meal of the day, so they say, so why not make it a ruddy good one?

This independently-run café is attached to Peckham’s South London Gallery. Prices are kept very low and there is plenty of choice for veggies.
