All In London Review

A Saudi corporation opens a fish & chip shop in Covent Garden. Yes, really

Throughout the recession, new developments and restaurant openings have hardly slowed down, however new venues have mostly been expansions on the part of giant companies. Wealthy Gulf and Middle Eastern states are getting in on the action; just look at the Shard, the tallest building in the EU at the time of writing, funded by Qatari investors, and the Pinnacle (currently unfinished), backed by a Saudi company. Lebanon’s BRGR.CO opened a branch in Soho in late 2012, and Dubai’s glitzy OKKU arrives later this year, and now there’s even a Saudi venture by the name of London Fish & Chips in Covent Garden.

Their first UK branch – for they are hoping to expand to Manchester and perhaps further afield – is a stone’s throw away from the Strand, in prime tourist territory. They do food to go, but there is seating upstairs where it’s a little cheesy, all red Perspex chairs and toilet doors covered in red phone box prints.

Dishes are called things like ‘Trafalgar’ and ‘Battersea Bangers’. The ‘Big Ben’ has a chunk of cod with tiger shrimps, chips and a drink for £10. The shrimps are nicely cooked and tender, the cod is firm yet flaky, and best of all is the batter, very crispy, light and uniform. But the curry sauce and gravy are bland and far too runny. Mushy peas and chips are ok, although the latter could be crisper and more generous, as chip shop servings are generally huge.

The ‘Jubilee’ sandwich (£6.99) has a hunk of un-battered grilled fish, with heaps of lettuce and tomato, it’s fresh-tasting and pleasing, even if the advertised chipotle sauce and lime are imperceptible. Not as satisfying as traditional chip shop fare, but better than our initial cynicism had us believe.
