All In London Review
A fun fishy restaurant for the crew
We arrive to take our place in the rear garden, the place that seems the only way to go on a ‘summer’ evening where intermittent showers aren’t enough to keep the temperature down. If you haven’t guessed from the name, Mussel Men is all about the fish, so should you be adverse to the cuisine, you’d best sling your ‘ook because there’s nothing for you here. Stylishly wrapped up in exposed brickwork and nautical flourishes galore – bouys, boat lights etc. – the restaurant is a looker.
A strong cocktail list supports a concise wine list and a range of craft beers by the bottle, plus you’ll find Innis & Gunn lager on tap. Mussels are the main event, with a range of broths to supplement the classic mariniere, ranging from a spicy tomato to a creamy vermouth-style stock. Easily done poorly, there are no such problems here. The mussels are plump, sauces rich and well balanced and the fries, well, they’re crispy, lightly salted fries. However, it’s not the mussels that we’re talking about when we leave. Taking on a trio of oysters accompanied by shallot vinegar, it’s the quality of the chilled crustaceans that would bring us back for more. While we found the six half langoustines to be a pretty sorry state, the range of Scottish, Irish and English oysters made up for our problems with the size of their aquatic cousins.
By all accounts, the night we turned up on was cursed with problems, from the broken dishwasher to an absent plumber, but who knew? While service wasn’t the fastest, it was knowledgeable, attentive and fun. Relaxed and informal, Mussel Men is more a place for the crew than for a couples’ night out – a point we proved by ending the meal with a pair of Bucky Bombs – a Scottish twist on the Jaeger Bomb for all the fans of Iron Bru and shots out there.
