No booze but the burgers will make you forget all about that...

A regular high street in Ealing is probably not the kind of place you expect to find Southern BBQ, but if there’s one thing that Meat and Shake are adding to the street food scene, it’s the unexpected. Behind the usual high street façade, you’ll find the results of what must have been a well-evolved mood board of Americana inspiration – think frontier cabin vibes with glowing filament bulbs and booths throughout.

The style just about hits the nail on the head and judging from the clientele arriving early after work on a Friday night, this is an event for all the family. Which is where the drinks menu comes in – or rather the lack of one. Meat and Shake doesn’t serve any alcohol, something that hits us with a pang of disappointment, quickly followed by some soul searching and the realisation that everything is going to be okay. Instead of beer and cocktails you’ll find diner classics like root beer and thick, ice cream shakes, which push the thought of liquor to somewhere dark and cold and distant.

The food is traditional American BBQ with added contemporary style - if you like your food served on a standard plate then look away now! The sticky hot wings, beef brisket burger and jalapeno-heavy Luchador burger are all standard umami-powered successes. The menu also features brisket, ribs, nachos and yet more meat.

Meat and Shake clearly tries hard, maybe a little too hard for its own good, but its menu and style are both a success and it makes a strong case to become your go-to high street restaurant for a solid family or group night out if you’re near Ealing.
