Ma' Plucker may be the new bird in town, but brimming with self assurance, she confidently says she'll serve up the best of the best fried chicken with a side of R&B, a hefty portion of soul and a laugh that makes the other chicks blush. That sounds like one heck of a chicken stop on a Friday night!

All In London Review

Chicken served three ways - four of the greatest words you'll ever hear.

Review Image
When you leave London for any prolonged period of time there’s nothing quite like stepping back onto its streets, filled with bookmakers and chicken shops, and thanking the stars you live in this city. Why would you ever leave a city where you can place a bet and order 6 hot wings almost any time of the day or night? Hip fried chicken peddlers Ma’ Plucker probably agree with that sentiment. Forgetting about the bookies for a moment, theirs is a dream which sees good quality fried chicken, served three ways, on every street corner.

Launching their revolution in Soho, on nominative determinism’s Beak Street, Ma’ Plucker is a chicken restaurant seemingly served up by graphic designers, such is the quality of the interior design. Think classy orange and beige tiles, a Portuguese influenced mosaic ceiling and more hanging pendant lamps than you’d find in all of Soho’s coffee shops put together – which is a lot, by the way.

As for the food, it’s all about the chicken and the ways that you can eat said chicken. You can have it deep fried in buttermilk, slow cooked and pulled or rubbed up and barbecued to juicy perfection. After trying all three, we’ll take the deep-fried excellence and the tender flavours of the bbq rub and leave the sickly, sticky goop of the pulled bird. For dessert we eat the cornflake and caramel sundae – it’s a sundae with cornflakes, there’s nothing to dislike about it – and the mini doughnuts, which come with a sweet, sweet dipping sauce so good that it makes us wish we hadn’t eaten so much chicken.

With a couple of frozen margaritas thrown in to cut through all that delicious salty goodness, the bill would have come to around £45 for two including sides of corn, coleslaw and fries. Not bad at all for a great atmosphere and chicken that comfortably beats the likes of PFC anytime.

Restaurants that serve a great brunch

Sit back, loosen your belt and tuck into about the best thing our US cousins have ever given us.

This retro haunt’s pluckin’ good Birds & Bubbles brunch is top of the list of good-value options. Expect a whole rotisserie chipotle ‘rubbed and roasted’ chicken served with unlimited prosecco, accompanied by a choice of two bases (freshly plucked salad, house buns or maple waffles), and two sides (Ma’s slaw, seasonal greens or ‘crack and cheese’ – a delicious ball of fried mac n cheese, to name but a few).
