the saffron has got to be a gem in brick lane. wonderful food and very good service. i am now an official saffron regular and for good curry(royal lamb, divine!) i would never go anywhere else on brick lane.

If you like to spend quality time with your fellow dinners, we can highly recommend Saffron, although if you like your food hot served under 3 hours we would also recommend the herb & spice.

For the festive season, well yesterday anyway, they seemed to have a high number of Birthday parties, which were very well behaved except for the vertically challenged ginger gentleman who insisted in singing to everyone.

Great for office parties almost on a par with the Herb & Spice

yours,
M.C.

My Girl friend and I had a meal at the Saffron restaurant 53 Brick lane E1 and were very very disappointed with it. We should have walked out within the first 30mins as the waiter was abrupt and the food portions small. When the bill came it was clearly unreadable and the waiter didnt take to me challenging him. In short these guys are fraudulently over charging customers for below par service and food. Please avoid this place there are plenty of decent restaurants who will appreciate your custom

went to Saffron on Monday night. Same as others , was told any starter, main course, rice and bread plus 2 drinks for £10 each by the man outside. My partner asked for a Bacardi and was then told that choice is only beer, wine or soft drink unless we wanted to pay for the Bacardi ( beer was also just 1/2 pint). Although we only ordered 1 rice and 1 naan between us were still told that poppadoms would be extra, despite being on the bread part of the menu ( tempted to order the other rice and naan , but refuse to waste food just to make a point). My partner's Dhansak was very good, but my Lamb Pasanda looked like a dish of grey (??) mud and was just sweet and lukewarm ( did not find any evidence of nuts at all). I was amazed to see that this is listed as their signature dish. Definitely will not be going back.

Food was ok, but AVOID this place - they offered a free first round of drinks + 20% off food, but when the bill came they charged us double what we'd spent, with the bill written in scrawled writing so we couldn't see what the charges were for.

AVOID AVOID AVOID what has to be the most dodgy curry house I've ever stepped foot in. The food was ok but it does not make up poor slow service and the rip off they tried with the bill. We took the free drink with 25% off the meal deal at the door but when they brought the bill it came to £155 but was just a load of writing but no break down so we asked them to give a break down so we knew what we paid for. 20 minutes later (no joke it took them 20 minutes to re write the bill) they came back with one for £140. We questioned why only £15 off when it's 25% and they said it did not include drinks. This we knew but the drinks only came to £43 so even the food round off to £100 it would be £25 off. Also looking at the bill they charged us £15 for 20 poppadoms even though they just gave them to use without asking but we thought nothing of it because they said would we like some free poppadoms when we sat down. We paid it in the end because we just wanted to get out of there but my advice is if they do this to you just walk without paying, then they might change their ways!!!
On top of this when a few extra people arrived to out party, instead of adding a extra table to out full table they just made us squeeze up so they could fit on. In the end we had 9 people on a 6 people table and the place had at least 5 empty tables. This place was just shocking!

I had a set lunch outside on the pavement for about £6. I know the set lunch is cheap but it should be a taster for evening meals.

The food here was really quite good and tasty but its such a pity that none of the restaurants on Brick Lane seem to be able to get their level of service much above the pretty appaling level.

The Owner came along later and he was all right but you get the feeling that staff totally hate anyone eating there. Its not just this restaurant but all the restaurants in Brick Lane.

I eat in Indian restaurants all over London because I enjoy the food so much but its such a pity that in Brick Lane the service is so bad and most of the food not much better!

Although my experience with Saffron was not bad I have read some pretty horrific reviews - of food poisening and over charging - elswhere on the web and I think I was just lucky! My advice- there are so many restaurants on brick lane why take the risk and go here! If for any reason you do keep your wits about you - they will try and make you order starters and make you think you've not ordered enough but the portions are a good size so this is needless. The food was quite nice but considering we were on brick lane i was expecting more. Conclusion - Average takeaway standered served in a pretty dingy setting by people trying to exploit you in anyway they can.
