Part fish and chip shop, part restaurant, Seafresh’s simplicity and good value menu has succeeded in drawing in the customers. Located a stone’s throw from Victoria tube station, it appears to attract many a commuter for a substantial meal before heading home.
The variety of fish on offer is extensive, with classics such as deep fried scampi, fillets of haddock or cod, calamari and fisherman’s pie as well as meat dishes such as roast chicken and lamb cutlets. However in a happy twist, a meal here does not have to be the traditionally stodgy fare. Starters include avocado vinaigrette, served with a subtle, mustard and vinegar infused dressing, Gallia melon, and even appetizers like taramosalata and Greek salad, due to the origin of the owners.
The restaurants specialities are a little more, well special. Our choices of the Seafood Platter and King Scallops were generously sized yet light portions. The platter comprised calamari, king prawns and goujons of salmon, cod, skate, haddock and hake, with the choice of being either grilled or fried. A simple choice like this is hugely welcome as many eateries do not offer healthier options for those of us watching our waistbands. My companions’ King Scallops were even better, cooked till tender in white wine and parsley. Our fresh vegetables had been steamed just enough to still retain some crunch, just as they should.
For desert we ordered the Chocolate Fudge cake which arrived in another mammoth sized serving, and a Lemon Brulee. A variation on crème brullee and filled with lemon sorbet, this was a perfect desert to finish off the meal.
Despite dining here on a Tuesday night, Seafresh was very nearly filled to capacity by 8pm. There appeared to be many people dining here alone, giving the impression of being regulars, unsurprising given the relaxed atmosphere. It is easy to imagine this being the venue of choice for a quiet, easygoing meal after work. With its lack of pretence and good value for money, Seafresh is charming and delightful.
