Shepherd's is an old fashioned restaurant that is popular with politicians. They serve a variety of uncomplicated English dishes from a set menu including a long pudding list and extensive wine list. Several nooks and crannies allow for more private dining, and a division bell gets round the problem of parliamentary hours interfering with dining arrangements. They cater for vegetarians and private parties of up to 32 people.

All In London Review

MP favourite serves artful interpretations of British classics

Review Image
Shepherd’s Restaurant has long been an MP favourite. Not only is it just a minute’s expensed-taxi ride away from the Houses of Parliament, the décor has just the right amount of formality with a hint of art deco to perfectly suit business meals. The menu has dishes that sound British enough on paper to defend national gastronomy, but are given a haute cuisine twist to satisfy the discerning diner. Take for example the asparagus rarebit, which is nothing like the melted cheese on toast you cobbled together when hungover or the comfort food brought to your bedside when you have a cold. Here it’s reconstructed into sprigs of asparagus artfully scattered over the plate with blobs of cheesy cream and some very umami morel mushrooms. It’s unexpected, but it’s very good.

Another dish that seems to have been mistranslated is ‘thinly sliced Scottish scallops’. The friend has the forethought to ask if they are cooked, which as it turns out they’re not and are instead made into a ceviche with pickled watermelon; this adds a sweetness we’re not too sure of. Roast cod is a meaty, manly hunk of fish with a flavoursome veggie minestrone, and slow cooked loin of venison is triumphant - a supremely tender slab of meat paired with salted kale and a fruity sauce. Another highlight is the mini duck pie offered as a side dish: it’s magnificently rich, with meat as smooth as rillettes and a buttery potato topping. It’s worth returning for several of these alone and ignoring everything you’ve ever heard about cholesterol.

Unsurprisingly there’s a lengthy wine list that climbs into the hundreds of pounds, but there are a few nice options by the glass like a Pinot Noir for £6.75. The artful interpretation of the menu may be confusing, but there’s heaps to like here.
