The All In London Review

"Afghan cuisine, Oriental staff, Latin music"

Added Wed 01 Apr 2009 by Leila

Afghan Kitchen is tiny, part takeaway part sit down restaurant type of place; it is charming and delightful nonetheless. It is also a curious little venue where Afghan cuisine is served by Oriental staff with Latin music playing in the background.

Fighting its way amongst other eateries in Islington, Afghan Kitchen has been around long enough to establish itself as a value for money haunt; on the Thursday night I ate here as well as there being a few diners as early as 6pm numerous people came in to buy food to go.

The menu is limited yet interesting, we ordered a fish stew and the chickpea and bean stew along with rice as sadly there was no naan bread available till after 7pm. There was also lamb and spinach or chicken with yoghurt and pumpkin to choose from, the latter of which I am told is delicious. To accompany this we got some Afghan chutney, as again pickles were not available till later on.

The dishes were spicy and very tasty; however the quantity of oil the ingredients had been cooked in was a tad worrying, this was possibly not the healthiest of meals. To finish off we ordered two portions of baklava, which at £1 each were shockingly small, literally two small squares of the dessert arrived on a plate.

We couldn’t complain however, as at £10 a head for the above plus water it was just what we were after - a quick, economical meal to have before we headed to a show at Sadler’s Wells. Would also be a more interesting alternative to a kebab or Indian curry takeaway, should you be floating around Angel and need some sustenance.

My Review

8 out of 10 stars

Agreed, the menu is not overly vast but the food was delicious. It is a shame that it was not more traditional with more variety in the menu.

Overall great food at a good price.

My Review

5 out of 10 stars

The menu is very brief and the food (prepared in advance) is straightforward mix of veggie and meat selection. The best dishes, such as tender lamb cooked with spinach, show good use of spicing. We were impressed with bright-orange wedges of pumpkin, spiked with chilli and dressed with cooling yoghurt. Central Asian-style flatbread was dusted with sesame and nigella seeds.
However, you can expect to wait a long time for service if unlucky enough to be seated when takeaway customers come in droves. The resaurant gives them priority over you, always!
