Decided to have a quick dim sum for one yesterday afternoon. The man who had a presumably slightly higher rank than a waiter (as he did not have their uniform on) gave me a very disgusted response when I asked for tap water to drink. I ordered around £20 worth of dim sum. The pork in the siew mai did not appear to be fully cooked and the custard in the custard buns seemed like it was instant custard with some food colouring - the texture was quite powdery and thin. When I paid and left a tip the waiter did not even look at me or say thank you - he just walked off. The only place I would bother going to again in China Town for food is Plum Valley. The rest of the restaurants's food just seems to be full of MSG and of poor quality, the Chinese equivalent to a doner kebab shop!

I've just eaten at Gerrards corner with my girlfriend and my mum and whilst the food was generally very good, the service was at times shocking. The main culprit was a youngish waiter who was chewing gum the whole time, never said anything when he came to he table, literally threw a plate at me across the table, forgot to bring a jug of water the whole time we were there, didnt bring any replacement napkins when we asked for some ( so we asked someone else ) and generally was very rude and made us feel awkward for being there. There was an older Waiter in there ( maybe the manager ) who was very nice when he came over and said a few polite words but the whole experience for all 3 of us was 100% ruined by the other waiter. In fact we refused to pay the 10% service charge because of it.

Food 8/10
Service 2/10

Would i go there again ?? Probaly Not

My wife and I went to this restaurant with our 5 year old granddaughter. I am surprised at some of the negative comments on this site because our experience was very good. The staff were all friendly and they made a fuss of our granddaughter. She is new to Chinese food and is quite a fussy eater but my wife commented that she had not seen our granddaughter enjoy a meal so much for a while.

The food was good and certainly on a par with our local favorite Chinese restaurant.

Seems the theme is poor customer service. I've been a patron for over 5 years because I love the food and price is reasonable but the service can be a "hit" or "miss" depending on who is serving you. The current mainland chinese waitresses give the impression that they are prison warden - no smile, monotonous greetings (if you're lucky) and "dumping" food on the table instead of serving you the food while the rest of the waiters and waitresses are friendly and welcoming. It is a shame that good food is "clouded" by bad service.

I have used this restaurant many times and I always find the food to be great and the service good too. No complaints. The best part is that there is a basement karaoke which can be used free of charge, provided you let the restaurant know beforehand and there are enough of you such as a group booking (clearly not just a few of you). There are other Chinese restaurants in the area which also provide karaoke as entertainment, but they will charge you a fee per hour for the privilege, which can be up to £30/£40 an hour. Would recommend this, my favourite Chinese restaurant, anytime.

My Review

Despite the previous review, we had booked a party for the downstairs section for a friend's birthday surprise bash. We all turned up at the booked time and was immediately escorted down to the private room. The food was well presented and tasted delicious and we were allowed to use the karaoke which had a great sound system. We had one dedicated staff to serve us throughout the evening and had a thoroughly enjoyable time. For a typical chinese restaurant in Chinatown, I must say the toilets were nicely decorated and clean! Can't say about the negative experience that others had but we will definitely patronise this restaurant again as it is excellent value for money..Well Done Gerrards Corner!!

My Review

I booked this restaurant for my milestone birthday through recommendations of friends, a month before the actual day and was promised the section downstairs as I have invited 40 of my guests to join me at 7:30pm on 10th October 2009.

On the day itself, my guests were turned away and told to come back later 8:30 or 9:00 while the restaurant manager was trying to fill the tables with other punters from the street. Then when we finally had our section cleaned and cleared which wasn't until 9:30pm, there was noone to serve us despite the fact that I had paid for champagne and a selection of starters beforehand.

The service was appalling really and the manager in charge was just useless and rude. I don't recommend this restaurant at all if you want better service and food.

A very disappointed customer and I won't be coming back very soon.

We (a group of three Danish and one American guy) had dinner at Gerrards Corner in mid February 2009 and oh what a meal!
First I should perhaps warn that the cue for a table was long and I have since been told that reservation is recommended - a really good sign in it self. Another good sign was that the place was visited by many Chinese people. But we got a table faster that we had imagined.

A very nice Chinese waiter served us Chinese beers and we asked for his recommendations to the menu. We only specified that we wanted to try some dumplings, some pork, some chicken, shrimp and difference fried vegetables but that we were not ready for the more rare specialities (chiken feet and the like :-) )

We were served some fantastic and very tasty dishes - it was all very good! I recommend the same procedure (asking for recommendations) for anyone that not too familiar with typical Cantonese cuisine. We got a “ton” of food, at least three beers each and were charged around 80 GBP all together. I can warmly recommend this place to anyone wanting to eat genuine, Chinese food while in London. The service was excellent and all in all the experience was very authentic.

We went for dim sum. Food was very average; greasy, lukewarm and very very slow in coming out. we had to sit downstairs in a big dark room where only another table was busy... even so, service was soooo poor.
When it took 30mins to get our bill and realised that al you get is a handwritten note (!) we went to ask the full receipt. The front house lady was extremely rude, when she could not get the same total... unacceptable. never again. AVOID

I've eaten here without problems before but I am never going back again, they were so rude. I asked if a table for four was available and before I could explain that two of my party hadn't arrived yet I was unceremoniously whisked to a table. Both the waitress and the front desk lady tried twice to take away my friends plates and chopsticks (and even the chairs!) even though I explained that my friends would be arriving in 20 minutes (which they did), and both these people made a point to come over and rudely advise me that it was a busy night, obnoxiously estimating that my friends would actually be 1 to 2 hours late. If I hadn't have already ordered appetizers and drinks I would have left right then! A second waitress was nice enough but the original one and the huffy front desk lady continued to glare at us throughout the evening. The staff were narky throughout, mean to to me when they couldn't understand that I wanted an orange juice, angry when we sent back the sparkling water (my friend asked for still), and horrible when we took a few minutes to split the bill between four people. Not only will I not go there again, I am telling everyone I know not to go there. I can get better food elsewhere and without being yelled at, thank you very much.

Our meal was completely ruined by the manager and a waiter loudly abusing a young women for over 20 minutes because her card had been frozen. She called the company and was given a number for the restaurant to call to get approval for the payment. The waiter refused to call the number even as the girl, who was near tears, kept asking what they wanted her to do. The waiter just continued to be unbelievably demeaning and obstructionist. I finally couldn't stand to listen to him abuse her anymore and paid the small bill myself. Later when our waiter was asked to identify the dumplings in our starter we discovered they had not served the listed dumplings. They substituted cheaper items.

My husband and I come into town every year on our anniversary and go to the theatre and dinner. We have found the dim sums in Gerrards corner are the best ever and now return every anniversary.

Was recommended by friends about this place and was quite sceptical since I find the standard of Chinese food in Chinatown to be very ordinary, greasy etc.. What a surprise! The food is excellent and tasty, consistently good quality with a good selection of wine and champagne.
Brilliant staff - I once lost my ring in this restaurant and the staff bent over backwards to help me. They eventually found it the next day amongst a whole load of dirty table cloths! Great atmosphere and dining experience. Probably one of the best in Chinatown.

Unpretentous and good value authentic chinese food. The staff are friendly and helpful even when it was busy. Generally one of the better restaurants in Chinatown. Open until 12 midnight, we once managed to get in a quick meal upon arriving at 11.45pm! Excellent and highly recommended.

What a delightful experience we had in this chinese restaurant in Chinatown. After theatre we spotted this airy and nicely decorated restaurant buzzing with a mixture of hearty diners. The atmosphere is great, the staff very friendly providing excellent recommendations for our meal. They stock a wide range of drinks from chinese teas to great champagnes. A la carte menu offers a wide variety of classic and speciality dishes including vegetarian options. We had Laurent Perrier Rose with their top class set dinner which included a whole fresh lobster delciously stirfried. The bill was very reasonable indeed. Overall highly recommended for very satisfying authentic chinese dining experience
