After I got my university results my boyfriend and I decided to go out for a bite to eat before meeting friends. When we got to china house we were escorted to the back of the restaurant where the menus were thrown at us and then abandoned. Twenty minutes later and after having to listen to the waitresses talk loudly among themselves in Chinese I eventually managed to get the attention of someone to take our order. She was blunt and sharp before disappearing, the only highlight of the whole event was having our food arrive quickly. After finishing our meal, we had to ask again for the plates to be removed and then the bill was promptly dumped on our table. My partner asked if we could see the dessert menu and she brought him one, when i asked for a menu she simply handed me the menu she'd just given to my boyfriend. The waitress then proceeded to stand and scowl at me while I decided whether or not to have a dessert. After being made to feel extremely uncomfortable and unwelcome my boyfriend paid the bill (to an extremely disgruntled and very rude waitress who commented on the fact he dare pay by card rather than cash) then quickly left the premises, needless to say the whole experience was traumatizing and i will never go back let alone recommend it.

China House is brilliant on all but a very few occasions. The food is reasonable priced and tasty, the service is great when the the boys are serving. The elderly lady when serving can be slightly neglectful when the restaurant is busy. I've only ever been dissapointed with the service, the food has always been pretty good. On these occasions I have had to wait for my food. This has been due to overcrowding in the restaurant. Well the food is good and the patrons keep on coming.

Well I absolutely LOVE the China House! I have been visiting this place for nearly 20 years with colleagues and friends, the service is quick (if you get there early) the food is wonderfully hot and spicy if you like it that way, the menu is wide ranging and so CHEAP! The lady that runs the show can be loud and abrupt, and sometimes a little distracted when its time to pay, just take the money up to the till and she soon snaps back!

The previous reviewer is obviously used to eating at the bland soulless places you find in the Brunswick, not used to a place with character, charm and great filling food!

We went for lunch at China House yesterday, lured by the cheap menu advertised outside (£4.50, for soup and main course). This is the second time I go there. First time, I wasn't too impressed, but I thought I'd give it another try. We were asked if we wanted a table for two, just to be sat at a table with another man (although a couple was just getting ready to leave, so there would have been a free table). Then we were thrown the menus and 20 minutes later we were asked what we wanted. I wanted some clarification about something on the menu, but all I got was "Ho Fun? It's like spaghetti, you'll like it". So than we ordered the soup of the day (chicken and corn, same as last time I was there) and sliced duck chow mein with black bean sauce and the chicken curry. My partner received his soup and main dish, 5 minutes before I received mine. They were basically thrown on our table. The guy sitting with us at the table had asked for chilly oil, and used maybe half of it. Meanwhile he had finished eating and left. We asked for some chilly oil as well, and guess what? We were brought the exact same plate, they hadn't even bothered spreading the chilly in the whole plate, so that it's not so obvious somebody had used it. The soup was OK, but the main plate was disgusting. The chicken was uncooked, the curry had absolutely no taste. The chow mein was really oily and not to mention that all the dishes were slimy. I took a bite from my food and left it there. Throughout our whole meal the waitress was on the phone, literally screaming about 2 m away from us. Finally she noticed our desperate signs for the bill and just yelled "9 pounds". She grabbed our plates, didn't even ask why I hadn't touched the food or if I wanted to take it to go (not that I wanted, but you know, just be polite), and pursued to remove the paper table cover while we were still at the table.
Awful food, terrible service, quite a traumatizing experience. I probably will never go there ag
