The Royal Air Force Museum was established by committee in 1962 as a way of documenting and preserving the exceptional bravery and nationwide contribution of the Royal Air Force. Dr. John Tanner was appointed Museum Director and the site was chosen at Hendon. In November 1972 Her Majesty the Queen opened the Royal Air Force Museum. At that time Hendon had 36 aircraft on display.
Now the Royal Air Force Museum boasts more than 130 aircraft, though some are stored at various Air Force Bases and are brought in for temporary exhibits and commemorative occasions. One of the most famous exhibits is the "Dam busters" display. This exhibit tells the tale of 617 squadron, who managed to destroy key enemy targets with 19 Lancaster bombers and the famous "bouncing bomb". Located in the Battle of Britain Hall is the "Our Finest Hour" exhibit. Using lighting and sound effects, actors and props- the "Finest Hour" attempts to recreated the experience of witnessing the airborne battle that took place during WWII.
As well as aircraft, the Royal Air Force Museum contains collections of Artwork, uniforms, original photographs and an extensive library. The Museum has a gift shop, a restaurant and several cafeterias. A flight simulator is also available.
