At the time of writing, the development of London’s very own man-made beach is underway, complete with sand, sporting facilities (beach volleyball, handball and rugby), a restaurant and a bar with a 1 am license. In the evenings there will be entertainment in the form of club nights and live music, thanks to a stage, large screen and festival area complete with VIP village. From October onwards the beach will be covered so that it can remain open all year round (although this being Britain, it would probably be a better idea for it to be kept permanently under shelter - cynical us?) The beach, which will have capacity for 5,000 people, is just a few metres away from the o2 Centre, and looks out onto the river and Canary Wharf. Boris Johnson’s enthusiasm for the project is palpable: “I’m delighted that after a thousand years, London will soon have golden shores to rival even the best of the Caribbean” he said. Hawaii’s tourist board better beware.
