Recessions, the rise in homelessness and the dismantling of the NHS – there’s never been a better time to become politically engaged. London’s only socialist bookshop hosts talks by authors and activists; during one event about the miners’ strike film director Ken Loach just happened to be in the audience and was encouraged to do an impromptu speech. As well as books on the environment, trade unions, black struggle, women’s rights and LGBT issues, they sell posters, mugs and other memorabilia.
