Where: Brixton

Brixton Market has exploded into one of London’s most popular foodie areas, and with gentrification always comes the threat of chains arriving and taking over from small businesses. Which is why the Brixton Pound was developed in 2009, a currency that can only be used within Brixton. This encourages trade at local businesses, which in turn means protecting jobs and promoting independent shops and services. All you have to do is purchase the Pounds at one of the issue points, much like you would do if you were exchanging money to go abroad. Plus, instead of having a picture of the Queen, the notes have images of icons like David Bowie and black historian Len Garrison.
