As the saying goes, one person's rubbish is another person's treasure...
Freecycle is the acclaimed service where you can donate and pick up unwanted items for free in your local area, but they also run 'give and take' events throughout the year. Take the stuff you're thinking of throwing away (as long as it's in good nick) and pick up books, clothes, kitchen items and furniture at the same time. There's some pretty good swag too - at a recent event we saw a facial spa, a wool wrap top by BCBG Max Azria, and a carpet steamer.
