The University College London was founded in February 1826. Previously all university students had been male members of the Church of England. This was the first University outside of Oxford or Cambridge. The institution was dubbed "The Godless university of Gower Street" by the Church of England. The UCL was the first University to offer education in law, medicine and architecture. England's first Student Union was formed at the UCL. Among the many significant discoveries mad at the UCL were the identification of both vitamins and hormones. In 1878 the UCL became the first University to offer education to women on equal terms with men. Today there are more than 24 thousand students studying within the UCL community. UCL boasts the highest number of professors at any institution in England. The Nobel prize has been awarded to 18 academics and graduates of the UCL. The University College London can be easily reached via Euston Road underground Station.
