About VeloPark
North of the Olympic Park, the VeloPark will be constructed to form a Velodrome and BMX Circuit. The indoor Olympic and Paralympic Cycling events will take place in the permanent 6,000-seat Velodrome. The BMX Circuit will be a permanent BMX track with 6,000 temporary seats alongside it. The VeloPark design competition was judged by leading names from the world of architecture and design, as well as Olympic gold medal-winning cyclist Chris Hoy. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2009 and finish in early 2011, so as to allow for sufficient time for organisers to test events before the start of the Games. Once the Olympic Games are over, the plans are to move the BMX circuit next to the Velodrome, and for a road cycle circuit and mountain bike course to be added. The ultimate aim is to leave a lasting legacy which will create a VeloPark combining cycling facilities across all disciplines into one ultimate London cycling ‘hub’.
