Brockwell Park was developed in the early 1800s, and today it’s the main green space for residents of Brixton and Herne Hill. Aside from the Victorian lido and the tennis courts, there is another reason to visit. At the start of the 19th century, the Chief Officer of Parks decided to convert the kitchen garden –a section of the land devoted to growing vegetables, herbs and fruit – into the Walled Garden that exists today. It now contains pretty herbs and flowers, and remains a quiet spot for visitors. Its picturesque scenery led to it becoming the setting for performances of Alice in Wonderland.
