Sam Francis & Graham Hunter: Express Colour

When The Graham Hunter Gallery began plans for an exhibition of Sam Francis works at the beginning of the Year, fellow gallerist and friend of the gallery Daniel Brant suggested that Hunter actually place his own work in juxtaposition, showing the influence the artist had brought. Brant began construction a discourse through the two painter’s works.

Graham Hunter is an accomplished artist, having exhibited at the Royal Academy, as well as several independent galleries across the UK. Graduating from the Wimbledon school of Art, mentored by David Whitaker and Sir Terry Frost, among others, Hunter’s approach has evolved, along with his interests and inspirations.

Colour and controlled form have always been a major component of Graham Hunter’s work, being made up of deliberate, intense mark making. His recent work has however expressed an active intent to free up his style and become more playful in his application and use of colour. This collection shows a development inspired by Graham’s renewed interest in Sam Francis, and his Post Painterly Expressionism.
Sam Francis trained in medicine and psychology, coming to painting as a hobby when he was 21. By 1950, at the age of 27 he was an artist in Paris painting mainly in monochrome. A meeting with Jean-Paul Riopelle and his discovery of Monet’s Water Lilies developed an interest in colour and light that would last a lifetime.
