To celebrate our eightieth anniversary Liberty is hosting an exhibition charting our history, at the very place our founders met 80 years ago.
LIBERTY80 celebrates 80 years of Liberty holding the powerful to account, showing battles fought and won for freedom, fairness, justice and equality, with some striking parallels between 1934 and the present day.
In 1934 Britain was gripped by recession and social unrest. After witnessing the brutal repression of the hunger marches and infiltration by undercover police, Ronald Kidd formed the National Council for Civil Liberties. This small group whose members included HG Wells, Vera Brittain & Clement Atlee first met in the basement of St-Martin-in-the-Fields church. They became hundreds and then thousands who came together to “defend the whole spirit of British freedom” and be part of the organisation now known as Liberty.
