Silent Surface is a new exhibition from London-based artist Paul Schütze that celebrates the paradoxical life of the book.

Shown for the first time in the gallery space of Maggs Bookstore, one of London’s oldest and most celebrated antiquarian book-sellers, the exhibition takes images from the extraordinary environment of Maggs as a departure point to explore the materials and presence of books – the most beautiful of artefacts.

The exhibition consists of three elements: Paper – a limited edition book of photographs; Babel – a suite of prints and ln Libro De Tenebris – a specially designed aroma to accompany the works.

The exhibition will feature one large open volume - the blackened pages, impregnated with the scent that will gradually leak into the gallery space. There will also be a limited edition multiple (10) consisting of a bound, black-paged and titled book - the pages also infused with the aroma.

The artist has designed the perfume to evoke the history of the gallery space and the material and history of the book.

London based Schütze who works in sound, video and photography has exhibited at major galleries and museums around the world including: The Hayward, The Royal Academy, Reina Sophia, IVAM and the British Museum. He has also collaborated with artists including James Turrell, Josiah McElheny and Isaac Julien.
