1995 Evening Standard Best New Play of the Year.
Widely regarded as one of the best British plays to come out of the 1990s, Pentecost tells the story of Gabriela Pecs, a beautiful and passionate mid-level government functionary in a small, unnamed ex-Soviet Union country. Gabriela believes she has discovered something wonderful in an ancient, abandoned cathedral near one of her country's borders. Realizing that a celebrated art historian from England is arriving in her country to give a talk, Gabriela, er, "borrows" him at the airport and takes him on a wild ride through her nation's roadway system that brings him face to face with what very well may be a work of art that will change the course of history.
"a drama on the politics of language that ranks with Friel's Translations." - Independent on Sunday
"the meatiest new drama I've seen since Stoppard's Arcadia." - The Village Voice
"powerful, urgent and brilliant." - The Observer
This show is part of a Trilogy with The Prisoner's Dilemma and The Shape Of The Table.
