The Garden Museum is delighted to present an ongoing programme of Green Infrastructure events, supported by our partners The GLA, Landscape Institute, English Heritage, andThe National Trust.

The partnership was launched with our landmark High Line Symposium on 4-8 October 2012, and the subsequent ideas competition, ‘High Line for London’, for a green cultural landmark for London.

The programme continues in 2013 with a series of study days, symposiums, talks and lectures aimed to develop awareness of green infrastructure, and to share research and innovative practice, whether future visions or individual case studies.

We wish to show that green infrastructure is not an invention of 21st-century environmentalists; it is as much a post-war New Town, a Victorian Park, or an 18th-century urban square as it is as new turf-roofed eco-centre. At the same time, there are distinctive challenges to the incorporation of historic structures into the green infrastructure movement, such as the place of tree planting in historic vistas, or the adaptation of listed buildings to green roofs and green walls.

Green urban space is a finite resource. Defined curtilages such as parks or formal square gardens are preserved, but we wish to argue for the value of less “obvious” open spaces between buildings as significant to the balance between buildings and open space which characterize historic British cities.

Green Infrastructure Week 2014

From Monday 28 April to Sunday 4 May we will host a week long festival of Green Infrastructure events using the Garden Museum as a hub for dialogue and debate between professionals from a range of vocations, and aimed at a diverse, urban audience. The programme of events will include academically rigours symposia, off-site field trips, high profile international speakers, and light-touch evening and weekend events with a celebratory atmosphere.
