France’s Compagnie Käfig combine the noble art of boxing with music and dance in Boxe Boxe. Choreographed by Artistic Director Mourad Merzouki, the brutality and elegance of these contrasting worlds collide in a spine-tingling display which packs a knock-out punch.
Eight dancers blend martial arts, street and contemporary dance creating a fusion of hip-hop and fisticuffs, drawing on the pageantry and theatricality of boxing as bright red gloves effortlessly morph into puppets and punch balls explode like featherweight balloons. While music from Schubert and Ravel to Philip Glass and Glen Miller punctuates, sustains and reflects the movements, injecting romanticism and melancholy into the shifting scenes.
