Year of the Bus – 75th anniversary of the RT-type bus

Throughout their history and right up to the present day buses have made a real difference to the way we live, how we get about and the manner in which this remarkable city operates.

This year we are celebrating the ‘Year of the Bus’ – to re-connect Londoners with their bus network and remind the world of the incredible role it plays in the capital.

One of the significant anniversaries this year is to mark 75 years since the RT-type bus entered passenger service. The RT is the predecessor to the Routemaster (which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year).

RT-type buses first entered service in 1939 on route 22.

On Saturday (12 April) the London Bus Museum will be operating a number of RT-type buses on a section of route 22 – Piccadilly Circus to Homerton. The buses will run between 10:30am and 4:30pm – every 10-20 minutes.

The buses will be free for passengers – apart from RT1 – for which there will be a £10 fare.

People can find further information, including a timetable of this special service, at: http://www.londonbusmuseum.com/rt75/

On Sunday (13 April) there will be the annual Spring Gathering at the London Bus Museum (Brooklands, Surrey) – with an RT 75th anniversary theme.
