EXPERIENCE THE GRITTY DIVERSITY OF LATVIAN DOCUMENTARY CINEMA

A rubbish dump teaming with life, a rural family living in incest, a man who cycles seven kilometres every day to sit and drink beer at a bus stop – these are some of the weird and wonderful characters brought together by the Latvian Documentary Film Afternoon at the Rio Cinema in Dalston on Saturday 26 April.

Starting at 1:30pm, the special event will showcase a selection of four Latvian documentaries and two animations, which have been screened and awarded at international film festivals, including BFI London Film Festival and Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival.

The event aims to introduce contemporary documentaries and animations and promote the unique work of filmmakers from the small Baltic state which often struggles to reach international audiences.

Full programme:
• Choir Tour (2012), Official Selection BFI London Film Festival 2013 – a world-famous boys’ choir goes on a tour and the conductor gets trapped in a lift
• Ursus (2011), Animated Dreams Special Mention Winner, Tallin Black Nights Film Festival 2012 – an acrobat-motorcyclist bear longs to find true happiness in the wild
• Dreamland (2004), Nominated for Best Documentary, European Film Awards 2005 – a film crew arrive at a landfill site to investigate reports of a giant mutated worm
• Theodore (2006) – every day come rain or shine, Theodore cycles seven kilometres to a local bus stop to sit and drink beer
• How are you doing, Rudolf Ming? (2010), Winner of the UNICEF Special Award at the EBS International Documentary Festival 2011 – Rudolf is a 13-year old boy who is obsessed with film making
• Family Instinct (2010), Best World Feature Winner, Silverdocs Documentary Festival 2011 – a film about incest - social taboo and a violation of religious norms, which follows the lives of characters in a god-forsaken Latvian village

Rich in beautifully shot surreal scenes, compelling characters and controversial subject-matters, the Latvian Documentary Film Afternoon is ‘obligāts jebkuram kinomīlim’ – that’s ‘a must for any documentary film lover’ in Latvian!
