Join Shoreditch’s 5-star Shakespeare Company The Malachites as they return to the crumbling majesty of St Leonard’s Church, with Shakespeare’s lyric tragedy of deposition, divinity and decay - Richard II. Set in an England decimated by plague, Richard is a divinely appointed monarch bringing order and civility to the shattered society of the late 14th century.
Dedicated to illuminating and uncovering the many ties between Shakespeare and Shoreditch, The Malachites endeavor to reunite “The Borough and The Bard”. While Stratford has its Royal Shakespeare Theatre, and Southwark its Globe, Shoreditch (site of the original Theatre and Curtain), lies largely forgotten. Roughly half of Shakespeare’s surviving plays premiered at the Shoreditch Sites and it is the Malachites mission to rediscover this rich heritage.

When Shakespeare first moved to London, St Leonard’s was his congregational church, and may have inspired his setting for Juliet’s famous burial chamber scene. The original “Actor’s Church”, St Leonard’s is the resting place for a number of the Lord Chamberlain’s men including Shakespeare’s greatest actor Richard Burbage.

Following 5-star productions of Titus Andronicus and The Merchant of Venice, The Malachites continue their journey through Shakespeare’s Shoreditch years. Step into the vibrant Shakespearean history, immerse yourself in the breath-taking sights and sounds of St Leonard’s, and enter the delicate and dangerous world of King Richard II. You’re sure to enjoy “one of the best value-for-money shows currently playing in London” (What’s On Stage).
