We wanted to send you a note about a charitable exhibition and sale of the work of the late artist Ellen Charap. All proceeds from the exhibition will go to Variety, the Children’s Charity, to help many children and young people throughout the UK who are sick, disabled or disadvantaged. The event will be held at the Art Bermondsey gallery on Bermondsey Street, starting on Wednesday 2nd through Sunday 6th July, 2014
When Ellen Charap died last year she was still making art. Born in Munich, Germany in 1937, she emigrated with her family to the USA in 1939 where she later trained as a painter in abstract expressionism. She moved to London in 1963 and spent over fifty years drawing, painting and printing. Several of her works are in museums and private collections across the country but many have never been exhibited. This week-long exhibition will mark the anniversary of her death and is a belated opportunity to see the range of her artistic output.
Ellen produced a lifelong body of work, ranging from the bold abstract expressionist canvases of her youth to soothing landscape watercolours of her mature years. In between she created sensual nudes, striking silk screen prints with images from the movies, imaginative spray paintings about immigration and gangsters, along with vibrant paintings of flowers and swimmers.
Guests are invited to browse over a hundred of Ellen’s works in the catalogue. Some of the smaller works will be available at a discounted price of £100 at Art Bermondsey.
On Sunday, July 6th, at 3:00 PM, some larger works will be auctioned at the gallery at greatly reduced prices.
