Synecdoche is a Bristol-based collective of fifty emerging artists which is presenting its debut exhibition at The Embassy Tea Gallery in London from Tuesday 8th July to Sunday 13th July 2014.
The show reflects the title; each part represents the whole and the whole is the sum of those parts. The individual works could not exist without the influence of the others. However, the work is very varied. Originally from the Drawing and Applied Arts degree at the University of the West of England, much of Synecdoche’s work has a strong foundation in drawing, although, through explorations with materials and processes, they aim to challenge the perceptions of what it means to draw. Some aspects of the drawings are intensely physical - scratching, gouging, cutting, forming, stitching; others are more contemplative – smoothing clay, filming, printing, knitting; some involve elements of alchemy, magical moments of change in control that affect the final outcome, forging, firing and felting; but all their work is driven by curiosity and playfulness. What will happen if…..?
Synecdoche pushes the capabilities of a diverse range of media including paint, print, ceramics, metal, textiles and more. For this show they have brought together an intriguing and eclectic selection of works. Some of the work is two dimensional, some sculptural, some includes audio elements; some will make you pause and reflect, some will make you recoil, some will make you laugh out loud, but it is all thought provoking.

The exhibition will showcase the collective's distinctive approach to making art. Led by concentrated interactions with materials yet concept driven, Synecdoche investigates the boundaries of mark making, each artist adding his, or her, own personality and sense of play to their work. Their intention is to blur the boundaries between fine art and craft by creating intellectual connections between material, process and concept. This is what has brought them together as Synecdoche.

Most of the displayed work is for sale and they will also be selling prints, cards and smaller pieces in the shop area of the gallery.
