The Art Book: Revised Edition is the first solo show of London based artist, Maggie Williams, whose most recent series of work of the same title involves the delicate transformation of familiar images from art history.

At first glance, the viewer is presented with another seemingly exhaustive reproduction from The Art Book. However upon closer inspection, nuances of alterations can be identified, enticing the viewer to reconsider the image and the artwork’s role within history.

The historical contexts in which the artist and artworks are set are revised as each page is removed from The Art Book; important themes and components are extracted from every image and revisualised using simple and subtle paper collage techniques. Infamous artworks are modernised with displaced subjects and art history is reinterpreted with a poignant and playful twist.

The redescription and transformation of an object or image is a theme that appears heavily throughout Williams’ work. Whether the process is delicate or destructive, her artwork mirthfully reintroduces mundane objects in a new form. The selective reconstructive process within Williams’ work bears as much importance as the final pieces themselves as each art object is premeditated before creation.

Maggie Williams (b.1989) is a British artist currently living and working in London. Since graduating in 2011, Williams has both organised and exhibited in numerous group shows in London and further afield.

The exhibition, curated by Franco la Russo, will take place at cueB Gallery, 325 Brockley Road, London, SE4 2QZ from Friday 11 June until Sunday 10 August.

A number of Williams’ works will be exhibited during The Art Book: Revised Edition alongside a site-specific installation based on the series.
