Film Distributors’ Association (FDA) is, for the second year, to present ‘State of the Art Cinema’, a free public exhibition offering an interactive experience of contemporary film poster design and photography.

Comprising around 75 stylish artworks and insightful images, the new collection will highlight the sheer spectacle and diversity of films from around the world opening in UK cinemas between July 2014 and early 2015.

In today’s ‘always on’ multi-media world full of visual stimuli, the exhibition will explore how individual designs ‘cut through’ and attract different responses from different viewers.

Presented by FDA on behalf of UK film distributors, ‘State of the Art Cinema’ will be displayed in six broad themes: Britain on screen; Family heroes; Out of this world excitement; Down to earth adventure; Cinematic comedy; and Thrillers & chillers. The exhibition will encompass films made in the UK and around the world by emerging and well established filmmakers including Tom Green, John Carney, Rowan Joffé, Mike Leigh, David Fincher, Christopher Nolan and Robert Rodriguez.

‘State of the Art Cinema’ 2014 will debut 1–12 July at the A&D Gallery in Marylebone, followed by residence at the Strand Gallery, Charing Cross from 29 July to 23 August. Visitors with smartphones will have instant access to a range of related audio-visual content, while a live events programme will reach out to graphic design students, film bloggers and families, as well as fans.

Special competitions will include the opportunity to design a UK film release poster. A daily schedule of social media activity will encourage users to engage in, comment on and share the exhibition experience. The entire collection of images can also be perused in an online gallery at the dedicated website, stateoftheartcinema.com.
