School may be out for the summer but Microsoft and Carphone Warehouse are still feeling scientific. The technology giants have joined forces to bring a world-first to Westfield shopping centre - on Thursday 24th July 2014, they will be unveiling a 20ft wide organic charger, made using 800 pieces of fruit and vegetables, that will wirelessly charges a brand new Lumia device.

Science enthused artist Caleb Charland helped Microsoft and Carphone Warehouse create the organic installation, with the aim to power a Lumia smartphone device. Caleb’s recent body of work entitled ‘Back To Light’ was inspired by the well-known school science project, where an electrical current is created using just a potato. Caleb has now applied this method to create the Lumia organic charger on a much greater scale.

To generate the power to charge the Lumia device, Caleb created a special, large-scale installation using galvanized nails and copper wire threaded through 800 pieces of fruit and vegetables. His hand-built circuit allows an electrical current equating to an average of 20mA and 6 volts to flow through the installation and create the charge.

Providing beauty with brains, the unique scientific art installation will be free to view for one day only from 9.30am until 5pm on Thursday 24th July at Westfield shopping centre, Shepherd’s Bush.
